Vegetarian Mexican Food in Side: Meat-Free Tex-Mex Done Right
Yes, you can eat proper vegetarian Mexican food in Side. Hawaii Restaurant in Side old town serves a real Vegetarian Burrito, a Vegetarian Quesadilla and veggie-friendly fajita from its wood-fire and charcoal grill kitchen, open daily 10:00–02:00 with free pickup from selected hotels.
Meat-free Tex-Mex, without the afterthought
Most Mexican menus treat vegetarians as an afterthought — a plate of rice and a shrug. At Hawaii Restaurant on 512. Sk. in Side old town, meat-free Tex-Mex is on the menu by name, not by improvisation. If you have been searching for "vegetarian Mexican food Side" or a genuine "meat free burrito Side", this is the round-up you were looking for.
We have been cooking here since 2000, and the same wood-fire and charcoal grill that sears our steaks also chars peppers, onions and tortillas for the veggie plates. That live fire is the whole point of Tex-Mex, and there is no reason a vegetarian should miss out on it.
The three meat-free dishes to know
Here is the honest short list — the actual vegetarian Mexican dishes on our menu, not a wish list:
- Vegetarian Burrito — a warm, rolled tortilla filled the Tex-Mex way, minus the meat. This is the "meat free burrito Side" people ask us for by name.
- Vegetarian Quesadilla — a folded, grilled tortilla, cheesy and hot off the plate. Simple, satisfying and reliably meat-free.
- Veggie-friendly fajita — fajita is theatre: sizzling peppers and onions arriving at your table still crackling. Order it without the meat for a proper vegetarian fajita, and roll your own at the table.
These three own a niche that our broader guides only touch on. If you want the full Mexican picture — chicken and meat versions included — see our Mexican food in Side guide. And if you fancy a shareable veggie starter, our nachos page is worth a look (nachos are easy to keep meatless — just ask).
What "vegetarian" means here — honestly
We want you to order with confidence, so a few straight facts. Our kitchen cooks meat too, so if a dish arriving strictly meat-free matters to you, tell your waiter and we will make sure of it. All our meat and chicken are halal (halal slaughter), which makes Hawaii a comfortable, family-friendly choice for many guests — though it is worth being clear that we are also a bar and serve alcohol, so we are not an alcohol-free venue. Pork is only ever prepared on request, in a separate area with its own dedicated equipment, and never near your veggie plate.
For a fuller list of meat-free options beyond the Mexican corner — including our vegetarian pizza and veggie food — we have you covered. Guests eating fully plant-based should read our vegan and plant-based in Side notes first, since our vegetarian dishes contain cheese and are not vegan by default.
