Travelling vegetarian in a grill-happy country can feel like living on chips and hope. Side is better than its reputation — and at Hawaii Restaurant the vegetarian options are a real section of the menu, not a footnote.

The vegetarian pizza, done properly

Our Vegetarian pizza is loaded — a proper pile of vegetables over melted cheese on fresh dough, built to satisfy exactly like its meaty siblings. It is one of the fifteen pizzas on the board (see them all), not a special request.

Beyond pizza: the veggie section

• Vegetarian pot — a hearty baked vegetable casserole.
• Vegetarian curry — from the same kitchen that makes our chicken korma and tikka masala; the spice work is real.
• Vegetarian fajita — sizzling from the Mexican corner, with a Vegetarian burrito and Vegetarian quesadilla nearby.
• Vegetarian spaghetti — simple, honest pasta.

Starters and salads that happen to be veggie

The starters list is quietly a vegetarian feast: garlic bread, garlic mushrooms, onion rings, cheese rolls, deep-fried sheep cheese, oven-baked white cheese in foil, tomato soup, mushroom soup and a mixed meze plate in the Turkish tradition. Add a Greek salad or the goat cheese salad with walnut and honey and you have a table nobody pities.

The honest notes

• We are a busy grill kitchen — if strict separation matters to you, tell your waiter and we will advise honestly on the night.
• Vegan? Several dishes can go cheese-free — ask, and we will say clearly what works and what does not.
