Hawaii Restaurant & Bar in Side old town pours a short, honest beer list: ice-cold Efes in 33cl and 50cl, plus Tuborg, Carlsberg, Beck's, Miller and Corona, with Diesel and Shandy for mixed-pint fans. There is a particular moment on a Side holiday — somewhere between the beach, the ancient columns and a plate arriving from a charcoal grill — when nothing on earth beats a properly cold beer. We have been serving that moment since 2000. This is exactly what is in our fridges: no padding, no ghost bottles that ran out in 2019.

The Local Standard: Efes, 33cl or 50cl

If Turkey has a national lager, it is Efes. Crisp, clean and built for hot climates, it is what most of the coast drinks, and it is the beer we sell more of than anything else. We pour it in two sizes: a 33cl for a quick, ice-cold hit with lunch, and a 50cl for a proper session alongside dinner. If you want to drink like a local in Side, this is where you start — and honestly, with anything coming off our wood fire and charcoal grill, it is where many people happily stay.

The Imports: Corona, Beck's, Carlsberg, Tuborg and Miller

Plenty of guests want the taste of home, and we keep the fridge stocked accordingly. Corona from Mexico is the light, easy-going one — summer in a bottle. Beck's brings that dry, clean German pilsner character. Carlsberg and Tuborg are the two great Danes: familiar comfort for the Scandinavian, German and British tables alike, and a common sight at family dinners where mum has one, dad has the other, and nobody argues. Miller rounds out the list for anyone who likes their lager smooth and unfussy. A word of honest advice: local versus import is a matter of taste, not quality — Efes holds its own against any of them, so do not be afraid to go native. Diesel and Shandy: The Mixed Pints

Two classics for people who want beer with a twist. Diesel is beer mixed with cola — dark, sweet-edged and a firm favourite with German guests. Shandy is beer lengthened with lemonade: lighter, lower-key and arguably the smartest thing to order at two in the afternoon when the Side sun is doing its worst and you still have plans for the evening. Both are proper drinks here, not afterthoughts.

What to Drink With What

Beer pairing does not need to be pretentious, but some combinations simply work. Efes and charcoal is the house classic — a cold 50cl next to köfte, lamb skewers or our 450g T-bone is as Turkish as it gets. Corona was born for lime, spice and char, which makes it the natural partner for our Mexican dishes — fajitas, burritos, quesadillas — or for the best burger in Side, served the proper way with chips. Beck's cuts cleanly through a thin-crust 33cm pizza. And if your table is split between Carlsberg loyalists and Tuborg loyalists, we will keep both coming and stay diplomatically neutral.

Match Nights, Big Screens and Happy Hour

A beer list is only half the story; the other half is where you drink it. Our screens show live sport through the season, so if your team kicks off while you are on holiday, you can watch the match in Side with a cold Efes instead of squinting at a phone by the hotel pool. Time it right and you can warm up during Happy Hour, every day from 19:00 to 20:00 — the one hour when the cold list gets even friendlier. Later on, the karaoke stage opens, and we will leave what happens after your third Tuborg between you and the microphone.
