Where to Eat Near Gündoğdu: Make the Side Evening Count

Gündoğdu holds down the western end of the Side hotel coast — big beachfront resorts, a wide stretch of sand, and the pleasant hum of a purpose-built holiday village. What it does not have is Side's old town on the doorstep. That is fine: what Gündoğdu teaches you is to plan your evening out properly — and a planned evening beats a stumbled-upon one.

The Gündoğdu calculus

From the western end, Side centre is a longer hop than from Kumköy — call it a proper taxi ride or an easy dolmuş cruise down the coast road in season. Which means you do not pop into Side; you make a night of it. Counter-intuitively, guests from the far ends of the strip often have the best Side evenings — because they commit.

The committed evening, built right

1. Leave before sunset. The coast road at golden hour is part of the show, and the old town is at its best in the last light.
2. Walk the peninsula first — Apollo's temple, the harbour, the theatre walls. Appetite building is free entertainment.
3. Dinner with a plan — this is the night for the dishes that deserve ceremony: the Testi kebab cracked at the table, the 450g T-bone, or the Chateaubriand for two. Reserve — a planned night deserves a held table.
4. Stay for the second act — karaoke or a slow Irish Coffee; the taxi rank works late in season.

Why Hawaii is the west-end favourite
