How Spicy Is the Mexican Food in Side?

📍 Side 🕐 4 min read 21 Jul 2026

The Mexican-style food at Hawaii Restaurant in Side is flavourful rather than fiery. Dishes are seasoned for a warm, mild-to-medium heat that most tourists enjoy, and the kitchen can dial the spice up or down. Ask, and even nervous eaters or children can order it gentle.

So, is the Mexican food in Side actually spicy?

This is the question we hear most from guests eyeing the Tex-Mex section of the menu, and the honest answer is reassuring: no, it is not the eye-watering, mouth-on-fire kind of spicy. At Hawaii Restaurant in Side old town, our Mexican-style plates are built around bold, warming flavour — smoky, savoury, a little tangy — rather than raw chilli heat. Think comfort and character, not a challenge. Most first-time guests, including plenty who describe themselves as "not good with spice," clear their plates happily.

How spicy is the fajita, exactly?

Our fajitas are the dish people ask about most, and they are a great example of "flavourful, not fiery." The Chicken Fajita, Meat Fajita and Mixed Fajita arrive sizzling with peppers and onions, seasoned for a gentle, rounded warmth you can taste without any burn. It is the aroma and the char from our grill doing the heavy lifting, not chilli. Families and mixed tables love them precisely because everyone can enjoy the same plate. A quick heat guide to the Mexican dishes

Here is roughly where our Tex-Mex favourites sit, from gentlest to a touch livelier — remembering that every one can be adjusted:

  • Mild and easygoing: the Vegetarian Burrito, Chicken Burrito and Mince meat Burrito; the Vegetarian Quesadilla, Chicken Quesadilla and Mince meat Quesadilla. These lean on cheese, filling and a soft, warm seasoning — very family-friendly.
  • Warm but comfortable: the three Fajitas, Chicken Nachos, Mexican Chicken and Mexican steak — plenty of flavour, easy heat.
  • A little more lively: our Buffalo Chicken Wings carry a tangy kick, and the Jalfrezi Curry Chicken sits on the spicier side of the section. Even these are approachable, and both can be softened on request.

Can I ask for it milder — or add more heat?

Absolutely, and please do. Spice level is one of the easiest things for our kitchen to adjust. Tell your waiter "mild, please" and we will keep the seasoning gentle; ask for "extra spicy" and we will happily bring the heat up for the chilli lovers. Because so many of our guests are holidaymakers with different tastes at the same table, we are used to plating the same dish two ways. There is never any awkwardness in asking — it is the smart move.

What about the kids?

Children are very welcome here, and the Mexican section is a favourite with younger guests once we tone the seasoning right down. A mild Chicken Quesadilla or a plain Chicken Burrito tends to be a safe, happy choice for smaller appetites. Just let us know they are ordering and we will make it gentle. Good to know before you book

Hawaii Restaurant sits in Side old town and has been welcoming guests since 2000. Pork is available only on request and is prepared in a separate area with its own dedicated equipment. We cook over a wood-fire and charcoal grill, which is a big part of why the flavour is so rich even when the spice is kept low.
